International Women’s Day 2020-An equal world is an enabled world.

Women. Talented women. Beautiful women. Smart women. Plain women. Sophisticated women. Virtuous women. Strong women. Gentle women. The whole community of Homo sapiens will celebrate women on International Women’s Day on 8th of March. It is a man’s world they say, yet I have no qualms about being a woman, as we speak. I love being every inch of a woman-unapologetically, honourably, surefootedly. Womanhood is magnificent. Even more so, modern womanhood is puissant in nature because it is enabling, it is nurturing, it is beautifying. It the leading light of economic progress and alongside this, the stanchion of harmony and peace in our society.

Being a 21st century woman though is not all peaches and cream; we struggle with a lot of daunting challenges as we go about our daily lives. A tough nut to crack? Let’s draw you a picture!

1. The mental workload

The mental load, also referred to as the emotional labour is the total sum of responsibilities that women take on to manage ‘the remembering of things’. It is having to remember to pick up a bottle of Extra Virgin Olive Oil from the supermarket on the way back home from work, to book the 2nd medical appointment for the kid, to monitor the level of laundry detergent, to plan how the family will spend Easter Sunday, to ensure that the stove is cleaned and dinner is ready by 0730 PM and the list goes on. Even if you get someone to clean the stove, it is basically the woman delegating the task and vetting if it has actually been executed. It’s in broad outline project management. It is a permanent, invisible, exhausting job that rests on the shoulders of women. You might think that she needs help. Non. Non. She does not need help. What she needs is for the man to realise that both are equal managers in the family unit, to therefore step up and to assume equal responsibility of running the household. She needs the man to do chores without her having to ask him to do so. The mental workload is just too much for a woman to bear alone.

2. Toxic feminism

The feminist movement is usually broken up into three “waves.” The first wave pushed for political equality. The second wave, in the 1960s and 70s, championed for legal and professional equality. The third wave, in the past couple decades, has promoted social equality. The problem is that feminism is more than a philosophy or a group of beliefs. It is, now, also a political movement, a social identity, as well as a set of institutions. And institutions are always primarily interested in sustaining themselves first and engaging with the world as it is second. Those stalwart feminist activists of the 60s and 70s who were at protests and burning their bras, many of them moved into academia. They got degrees, wrote books, founded departments, held conferences, created political organizations, had fundraisers and started magazines. Pretty soon, feminism was no longer a cause for these people, it was their career. Their paychecks depended on there being patriarchy and oppression everywhere they looked. Their departments depended on it. Their professional careers and speaking fees depended on it. And so they found it. This pernicious brand of feminism is what I call toxic feminism. It gives intoxicated women an ideologically-lethal justification for annihilating all men for being men for their own private benefit. So, as a modern woman, today, we have to be able to discern our real advocates from the pretentious ones. That’s no small feat!

3. Taboos (Menstruation, virginity, infertility, sexuality)

I have been raised in a culture where I’m very comfortable phoning my younger brother, or any trusted member of the opposite sex for that matter, and asking him to buy me sanitary pads but there are daughters, mothers, wives and aunts who are shamed only because they are on their periods. There exist religious groups in India who in this day and age impose inhumane rules on women who are menstruating, barring them from entering the temple and the kitchen, or mingling with other people.

To make matters worse, in countries like Iran, Afghanistan and Indonesia, women undergo intensely dreadful, mortifying and traumatic virginity tests without their explicit consent.

If a young man has sexual relations with five girls, he is exploring his sexuality. If a young woman makes out with five men, she is extemporaneously labelled as a ‘slut’. If a man talks freely about his love life, he is a ‘real’ man. But we, women, are not encouraged to engage in healthy conversations regarding our own sexual needs and desires. With all due respect, we are supposed to be nuns. Sexy nuns?

4. Discriminatory laws against the welfare of women

Child marriage and forced marriage disproportionately affects females. Globally, 88% of countries set 18 as the minimum marriage age but 52% of countries allow girl children to marry with parental consent. Consequently, more than 650 million women alive at present around the world-one in five young women-were married as children. The elimination of child marriage by 2030 is a target under the Sustainable Development Goals by the United Nations, meanwhile it remains to be seen how they will address this mess in practical terms.

Anti-abortion laws are regressive, inequitable and unacceptable. We live in a world where we can go on holidays into space but in Alabama women do not have the right to bodily autonomy because they cannot abort a fetus growing inside of them, yes even in cases of rape! Ridiculous!

Come on, let’s call a spade a spade-the male guardianship system in Saudi Arabia is designed to treat the female gender as second-class citizens.

5. Objectification of women

Don’t get me started on this! Women are still primarily viewed as a physical object to be valued for its use by others. Research shows that this is likely to contribute to harmful mental and physical health problems (i.e., eating disorders, depression, low self-esteem, sexual dysfunction) when these women internalize this outsider view and begin to self-objectify by treating themselves as an object to be looked at and evaluated on the basis of appearance. It should come as no surprise that the number of cosmetic procedures: breast augmentation, liposuction, nose reshaping, eyelid surgery, gluteal implants are on an unprecedented rise.

Nevertheless, speaking from my heart, femininity is powerful. Ideal womanhood is a beautiful, synergistic blend of grace, compassion, love and patience. It is a most sacramental experience.

1. The Sacred Feminine

Grounded in spirituality, the divine feminine is an energy that has been with us since ancient times. Consciousness is divided up into the ‘masculine’ side and the ‘feminine’ side and, we need both to achieve our highest creative potential. The divine feminine is the aspect of the self associated with creation, intuition, community, sensuality and collaboration, regardless of one’s gender. Current literature indicates that women have higher emotional intelligence than men based on common ability tests such as MSCEIT and TIE which makes them better performers at positions of leadership and direction.

2. Childbirth Experiences

“We have a secret in our culture, and it’s not that birth is painful. It’s that women are strong.” Laira Stavoe

Nowadays, thanks to the avant-garde advancement in science and technology, the role of men in childbirth has become more participatory than it was in the past. However, there is so much more to labour and birth than contractions. It’s a maelstrom of emotion and sensation uniquely enjoyed by expectant mothers. From feeling the spirited kicks, zestful punches and sweet hiccups of their developing babies, to the pain their body endures during labour, women should be grateful for the life-giving power of the feminine.

3. Privileges in being a woman

Women don’t need to be empowered to “run the world”, they run it already. Women faithful to their femininity always have, and that since the day Eve made Adam eat the forbidden fruit. Modern chivalry manifests in situations where men buy dinners, drinks, jewellery and open the doors for women. So, if you are a woman, after everything, why should you deny yourself of such pamperings?

In addition, women do not face the societal pressure to be successful head-on as men do. Yes, they avail themselves of the luxury to make the choice between pursuing a professional career or simply marrying rich and retiring early. They can even do both, and nobody bats an eyelid.

In my crowning observations, I would like to mention that I am appreciative of who I embody, a woman–an empowered feminine woman. Most of us live in societies that support women to better themselves at all levels: financial, physical and emotional; and to lead fulfilling lives that seek to optimize our sense of well-being and completeness. At the same time, I acknowledge that there are universally ingrained, pharaonic barriers that impede our growth which sadly won’t be gone so easily. International Women’s Day is a gentle reminder that femininity itself is power. Female power sits in a woman’s hips, her heart and her womb. It is time we let go, we flow and we reclaim that power!

Join In The Fun! Join In The March 2020 Tea Party!

“What better way to suggest friendliness – and to create it – than with a cup of tea?” -J. Grayson Luttrell

Aloha, charming WordPressers!

I’m delighted to announce you that The Little Mermaid is hosting her eleventh monthly tea party on her website. What? A tea party? On WordPress? When? How? For whom? Alright..alright…take it easy. I’m coming on to your questions.

Classically, a ‘tea party’ makes one think of superiorly elegant and elaborate affairs of the Victorian times. It also conjures up images of fluffy scones, flavoursome muffins, Devonshire Cream and dainty sandwiches served on fine silver or deluxe bone china. Still, the elemental part of a tea party remains the affable exchange of dialogue among the invitees. Almost indistinguishably, the tea party that I am organizing is an online social event hosted in honour of bloggers, that is US! Blogging is most enjoyable when it is done interactively. The tea party, therefore, is an ideal occasion for socialising and making, as well as maintaining the acquaintance of those in the blogosphere. It is a chance to truly relax and to take some time to recharge one’s batteries by engaging in a light-hearted conversation, to be with friends and simply delight in each other’s company. While the first tea party was open-ended, subsequent ones will be topical.

This month’s theme is:

PETS

Do you have a pet or would you ever consider getting a pet? What is its name? How do you care for your pet; and what is the best part of having this particular animal around you? Tell us an interesting story about your companion.

The March 2020 tea party begins today and will close on the 31th. Make sure that you share a blog post round to the subject as a comment and allure bloggers to read you. As for newcomers out there-grab the golden opportunity to let your freak flag fly by sharing your first post with a huge gathering. Aren’t you excited?

Now that you’re in, it is noteworthy to mention that along with tea and cups, tea parties bring to the table certain etiquettes in the bargain that must be followed to make it more respectful and all the more interesting. Not only does this process make the tea party an entertaining one for everyone involved, it also makes coordination a lot easier.

So, let’s check out the guidelines below.

-Etiquette Number 1- Introduce yourself.

Introduce yourself, your blog or even your latest post to the community in such a way that it encourages others to converse with you. Avoid posting just a link as a comment which looks rude and spammy. Be polite.

-Etiquette Number 2- Mix and mingle.

Tea is a communal experience and there it requires that you meet and greet at least some of the other wonderful people in attendance. Participate by actively reading others’ comments and visiting their links/sites.

-Etiquette Number 3- Share & reblog the most recent tea party.

The purpose of the event is to create a platform where everyone benefits from real diversity of thought; and for that we need to find people who genuinely hold different views and invite them into the conversation. So, please spread the word in the blogosphere through reblogs.

It’s a sure thing that the tea party ritual punctuates our day with precious, refreshing pauses. Perhaps that is the true gift of a teatime celebration: it fills our cups with joy, warmth and friendship. May the echo of the teacup’s message be heard not only at special functions, but anytime friends come together, both in the virtual world and in reality.

With love,
The Little Mermaid

Poems

I Knew It Was Love

I knew it was love
when he looked into my eyes
erasing the amorphous clouds of doubts
for a canopy of delightful skies

I knew it was love
when the silence of winter mornings
no longer sent boreal chills
but beauty and wonder with its risings

I knew it was love
when he held my hand
rollicking me on a higher plane
of a perfect, faraway enchanted land

I knew it was love
when he whispered in my ear
the night we sought for the Pleiades
“You’re the brightest star in my life, Oh dear!”

I knew it was love
when love felt as light as a feather
blossoming the barren gardens of my soul
like it’s again December

I knew it was love
when he wrapped his arms around me
it felt like homecoming
Homecoming I knew love was!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2020

Dear esteemed friends,

It is with feelings of profound fondness and of consummate delight that I have the honour to address you all for who you truly are: wizards, mermaids, travelers, adventurers and magicians; and to share my impression on the festival of the Nativity of Jesus Christ and New Year with you. In these weeks that are passing by so euphorically, we see parks, public squares, roads, stores, hotels and restaurants welcoming the party season with sparkling firs, bows and baubles galore. Even buses are decked out with all things Christmas. The mesmeric decorations all over the world, besides being an affirmation of the majesty of the moment, provide a most heartening warmth in our soul.

In the same breath, this is preeminently the time to speak the truth, the whole truth, boldly, without prevarication. Hello parents, I’m pretty sure you are wondering what gifts to buy for your darling kids or grand-kids; and I feel your bewilderment at the plenitude of choices that you have. I ask of you, my dear people, what is a person more likely to remember, twenty years on, about his Christmas Day when he was only a five-year-old child? Is he going to recollect the deluxe $800 Lego “Star Wars” Millennium Falcon-a few pieces of which had been lost in just two days or is he going to recall, with vivid images, the ski trip he had taken with his siblings and how he had laughed uncontrollably when his father had farted in front of the disguised Santa Claus on that day? I trust you have gained not only glimpses of particular scenes, but also the purport of my words. Make mindful purchases. If you are to spend, then spend unhindered on things that will nourish your children’s ingenuity and spark their creativity. Spend on travels. Spend on books. Spend on musical instruments. Let your present leave its mark on your child’s heart forevermore. It must be borne in mind that in another part of the world, there is a parent working fingers to the bone from sun up til sun down so he could get his son a new pair of school shoes on Christmas Day.

It is far from my wish to make any sepulchral statements on an occasion that might well be called one of rejoicing but the reality is brutal. Our world is ailing. And if it takes brutal honesty to say it, so be it. The first step in solving any problem is recognising there is one. If we do not take this first step, we cannot hope for a better future. Our world is sick, yet silent-in the same manner a mother shrugs off her own sufferings, her own pains, to stand on her feet and prepare the ceremonial roasted turkey for her family. From being touted as ‘global warming’, ‘climate change’ to the climate crisis, you and I have witnessed, with horror and heartbreak, with a fundamental sense of the size and urgency of the catastrophic biodiversity damage, the war against Nature. They often say that living on the edge is the new fashion but what could be edgier than taking the whole of life on this planet to the edge of annihilation? With all bets off. I have fervent hopes, that if today, we promise to care for the Creation, the Creation will take better care of us till eternity. This would be the most invaluable gift to our children, and to our children’s children.

Uncertainty is hovering over the global economy. The political in-fighting of Brexit continues to weigh on the UK, with the rest of us not imperviable to its large-scale systemic risks as well. Unemployment, poverty, security and health remain an ongoing tremendous challenge for us to tackle in the new year. Every child born today is already burdened with a share of the enormous debt that our government has run up by borrowing money. Moreover, the destabilizing effects of conflicts in countries like Yemen and Syria are impossible to ignore. Amidst the prevailing chaos, the tribulations, the real and most meaningful Christmas presents for our close ones cannot be an iPhone 11 Pro or a PlayStation 4; the most beautiful gifts would be that of giving all of them equal opportunities, of saving their world from further ecological destruction, of giving them a pollution-free existence, of giving them the liberty to dream big and to pursue their goals through incisive economics and last, but not the least, of securing a future to enable our children to go through their daily life and work, knowing that they have peace, they have safety, they have freedom.

Our unity as bloggers may well be a unique spectacle, and an episode in itself. It is my duty to pay the most wonderful tribute of gratitude and admiration to you, my loving friends. I am very glad to hear of the excellent work and splendid deeds you are carrying in the fields of arts, literature, music, technology, leadership and philanthropy among others. I need not say, also, how much I feel the compliment and pleasure of being connected with you. There’s something consoling about listening to or reading someone’s words that sound relatable; words that have to do with something we’ve specifically been through but never knew how to put in words, or something we’ve always had at the back of our head, but we were never really conscious enough about it until we met someone in the blogosphere who’s able to give it a name. The best of all is, those heart-to-heart conversations that bring out the most genuine feelings and lots of “I thought I was the only one”. When we ask ourselves which person in our lives mean the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving advice, solutions or cures, have chosen rather to share our struggles with a warm and tender hand. The friend who can be silent with us in our low moment, who can stay with us in an hour of grief, who can tolerate not knowing, not healing and face with us the reality of our vulnerability as a human, that is a friend who cares. I thank God you are here. It’s such a blessing; the ability to share, the ability to allow people to talk about their dreams, passions and joy; and this is what help us, bloggers, to sustain. It has been an added pleasure and an added thrill for me, to watch our friendship blossom; I am confident that the ties which bind us so closely will grow even stronger, and that our unity of purpose will be maintained in the coming year.

May we cast aside-for this sacred holiday season-the cares and dangers which beset us, and make for the children a period of fun and laughter in a world of storm. Let them open their gifts with rapture in their eyes. Share a kiss beneath the mistletoe. Wrap your dears close to your heart. Resolve that by our sacrifice and doing, these same children shall not be robbed of their inheritance, or denied their right, tomorrow, to live in a free and decent world.

I tell you what, this is off the record but do not assume Santa Claus likes his babies goody-good, he loves them naughty. Haha!

Meilleurs voeux de bonheur pour un Joyeux Noël et Heureuse Nouvelle Année 2020! May peace, love, prosperity and success follow you always.

Lots of love,

The Little Mermaid X

I’m delighted to announce you that The Little Mermaid is hosting her sixth monthly tea party on her website.

CONFESSIONS

Make a weird, a hilarious or an embarrassing confession about yourself.

The February 2019 tea party begins today and will close on the 28th.
