An L-Shaped Coronavirus Recession Looms Large Over The Global Economy

As the disastrous Coronavirus pandemic truculently spreads across the globe, killing hundreds of thousands of people, uprooting the life of many millions of humans like greased lightning, the probability of the world hitting a severe recession in the next few months is irrefragably a whole one; while a depression in subsequent years is but imminent. The unpredictable epidemiology of the disease has certainly given rise to a great deal of market uncertainty, rendering it almost difficult to draw a decisive conclusion. However, the risk of an L-shaped depression looms large over the global economy owing to the following baneful distinguishable indicators.

1. Deficit

Covid-19 has prompted governments to adopt urgent drastic expansionary fiscal policies in the form of increased spending on healthcare, financial rescue packages to businesses and aid to households at a time when they were already consistently running massive budget deficits. Air France has recently obtained a state aid worth $7.66 billion from the French state. Many airlines like Deutsche Lufthansa, American Airlines, Alitalia among others have filed for bankruptcy and have been saved by bailouts worth billions of dollars. Put it all together, with families coping with unemployment and firms with loss of income, potentially leading to mass defaults and bankruptcies, the future looks sorely unpromising.

2. Debt

The increase in borrowing by governments around the world as a result of the Coronavirus crisis will be dauntingly substantial. Globally, net public debt is projected to hike from 69.4% to 85.3% in 2020. As reported by the IMF, the debt ratio of the average advanced economy will surpass 120% of GDP. Emerging countries notably Africa, Afghanistan and Mozambique will bear the brunt of the pandemic.

3. Deflation

According to the OEDC, inflation plummeted considerably to 0.9% in Canada in March 2020. There were also steep declines in the general level of prices in the US, France, Germany and Italy for the same period. Against a backdrop of falling global oil prices exacerbated by a plunge in demand from consumers and businesses alike, the Coronavirus could trigger a dangerous deflationary spiral.

4. Currency debasement

In an endeavour to prevent liquidity problems, facilitate access to credit and anchor a healthy low interest rate environment conducive for investment, the key actions that most central banks will take include: decreasing the discount rate, lowering the reserve ratio, quantitative easing and printing of money. This will debase all the bigger currencies in the world as people will lose trust in the financial system. Presently, bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have joined gold as a safe haven thereby heralding a gradual but certain migration from the traditional banking system to the distributed blockchain-based financial system which is majorly risky, complicated and fraudulent in nature.

5. Supply Chain Shock

The Coronavirus has adversely impacted global supply chains. China is at the heart of GVCs for many world-leading companies like Apple Inc., Intel and Sony. Companies will be more prudent in their future risks assessment before they decide to relocate production or assembly to other countries. In any event, the likelihood of a second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic or any other similar pandemic erupting anytime cannot be cast off.

6. Deglobalisation

Post the pandemic, countries will impose even more stringent protectionist policies: sanctions, trade controls and tariffs to shield their domestic firms and workers from global disturbances. There will be tighter restrictions on the movement of goods, services, capital, labour, technology, data and information. For instance, immigration to Australia and the US has largely been cut off.

7. International Conflicts

Diplomatic relations between different economies have been aggravating over the past years; the COVID-19 crisis will simply pour gasoline over the fire. The ongoing war between Saudi Arabia and Russia and the US and China will have significant far-ranging spillover effects on the rest of the world. Either to grasp at straws for survival or to seek economic dominance over one another, the scenario for a cyber warfare is perfectly staged. Spoiler alert: the future is bleak.

8. Technological Disruption

Worse, the threat posed by technological revolution will be more pronounced than ever because firms will re-think old operating models, accelerate the pace of automation, digitalise their business model and lay off more workers in the next few years in order to remain competitive. Technological unemployment may characteristically become structural in the long-term.

9. Climate Crisis

The financial implications of the current climate crisis are astronomical. There is an unmalleable pressure on governments to ensure a green Coronavirus recovery that will be intensely challenging in itself since it is going to force a disruption in many industries like coal on which we are heavily dependent. The agricultural industry will be the saviour in the face of widespread famine of biblical proportions. Are today’s Homo-technologicus ready for a 180 degrees turn?

10. Social Problems

The Coronavirus will damage society in many ways. As youngsters find themselves trapped in a vicious cycle of poverty and joblessness, social problems specifically drug abuse, alcohol abuse, prostitution and theft, for e.g. hackers stealing people’s money from their bank accounts, will be on a historic rise. Hopeless adults may lapse into depression. Cases of suicide will soar. On a grander scale, the public will be confronted with an upsurge in money embezzlement, crime, corruption, violence and tax evasion.

The most appropriate policy response to the COVID-19 crisis would be one that prioritises the population’s well-being over economic growth. New Zealand’s Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern is doing a laudatory feat for her country. Under New Zealand’s revised policy 2020, all new spending must promote one of five government priorities: improving mental health, reducing child poverty, addressing the inequalities faced by indigenous Maori and Pacific islands people, thriving in a digital age, and transitioning to a low-emission, sustainable economy.

In light of the above, it is hoped that people are not led to falsely believe that things will improve in a month or in a year; because things are going to get worse in the years to come. It is the same mighty storm although admittedly we are in different vessels; some are navigating in superyachts, some in ferries, some are skimming in sailing boats while others in canoes. Civilization is not standing at a crossroad but has come to the end of the road. We could be facing a lost decade ahead. The devastation has been done. People are going to be vulnerable. It is the sacrosanct responsibility of a conscientious state to adopt policies to empower its citizens.

If the Coronavirus is an ugly, frightening werewolf; and should mankind be reduced to mere tiny ants in comparison, let us not despair, for ants are also the epitome of hard-work, indefatigable perseverance and unswerving dedication.

Join In The Fun! Join In The July 2018 Tea Party!

“What better way to suggest friendliness – and to create it – than with a cup of tea?” -J. Grayson Luttrell

Aloha, charming WordPressers!

I’m delighted to announce you that The Little Mermaid is hosting her first ever monthly tea party on her website. What? A tea party? On WordPress? When? How? For whom? Alright..alright…take it easy. I’m coming on to your questions.

Classically, a ‘tea party’ makes one think of superiorly elegant and elaborate affairs of the Victorian times. It also conjures up images of fluffy scones, flavoursome muffins, Devonshire Cream and dainty sandwiches served on fine silver or deluxe bone china. Still, the elemental part of a tea party remains the affable exchange of dialogue among the invitees. Almost indistinguishably, the tea party that I am organizing is an online social event hosted in honour of bloggers, that is US! Blogging is most enjoyable when it is done interactively. The tea party, therefore, is an ideal occasion for socialising and making, as well as maintaining the acquaintance of those in the blogosphere. It is a chance to truly relax and to take some time to recharge one’s batteries by engaging in a light-hearted conversation, to be with friends and simply delight in each other’s company.

Feel free to talk about anything: music, food, news, sports, fashion, books, travel or nature. The tea party will be open on the first day every month. The thread will be ongoing for that particular period and will be closed on the last day. Make sure that you share your favorite blog post as a comment on the latest one and allure bloggers to read you. As for newcomers out there-grab the golden opportunity to let your freak flag fly by sharing your first post with a huge gathering. Aren’t you excited?

Now that you’re in, it is noteworthy to mention that along with tea and cups, tea parties bring to the table certain etiquettes in the bargain that must be followed to make it more respectful and all the more interesting. Not only does this process make the tea party an entertaining one for everyone involved, it also makes coordination a lot easier.

So, let’s check out the guidelines below.

-Etiquette Number 1- Introduce yourself.

Introduce yourself, your blog or even your latest post to the community in such a way that it encourages others to converse with you. Avoid posting just a link as a comment which looks rude and spammy. Be polite.

-Etiquette Number 2- Mix and mingle.

Tea is a communal experience and there it requires that you meet and greet at least some of the other wonderful people in attendance. Participate by actively reading others’ comments and visiting their links/sites.

-Etiquette Number 3- Share & reblog the most recent tea party.

The purpose of the event is to create a platform where everyone benefits from real diversity of thought; and for that we need to find people who genuinely hold different views and invite them into the conversation. So, please spread the word in the blogosphere through reblogs.

It’s a sure thing that the tea party ritual punctuates our day with precious, refreshing pauses. Perhaps that is the true gift of a teatime celebration: it fills our cups with joy, warmth and friendship. May the echo of the teacup’s message be heard not only at special functions, but anytime friends come together, both in the virtual world and in reality.

With love,
The Little Mermaid

Poems

A Melancholy Evening

Ellie lay on her back awake
In her favourite rocking chair on the terrace
Closing her eyes nonchalantly to a scene opaque
At the time that love was a dangerous menace.
Those were the mirthful days spent in Paris
She reminisced about with a sigh of unalloyed bliss
When the sun shone a little brighter
The birds chirped sweet songs a little louder
The world seemed just a little better
For she’d fallen madly in love with him
And he’d fallen madly in love with her
From dawn to dusk, on a blithe whim
They laughed! They cried! They even were to conquer!
She was a beautiful, strong woman
Dare I say, she was not the common
Her spirits exceedingly fierce and free
He’d agree
Burning to ashes every immanent obstacle
The woman of his dreams was truly unstoppable
This is what he loved about Ellie
The ocean that she sometimes was. The fire that she interminably was.
He often brought her angel garden-fresh roses
As a token of his undying devotion
She always liked them red, full of fragrance
Adorned with her lover’s bruises
It was a shared love so faithfully immense
Timeless and beyond comparison.
Ellie and her darling had the best moments of their lives
Tucked in each other’s rapturous embrace
Unaware of society’s heartless knives
Ever primed to cause their disgrace
To the world they were not made for each other
Albeit in God’s courtyard
They were young lovers bound together
In innocence, in good faith, without any guard.
To happen, it happened
Their separation unbearable
The ocean slowly dried up. The fire dozed off.
Lifeless, clueless
They both wandered in the wilderness.
A melancholy evening it was, though no different
When Ellie tried to bury all the old memories, all the scents
In the deepest recess of her heart as ornament
Knowing they wouldn’t be forgotten
Until a thousand new crescents.

Propelling Your Blog As The Next Hot Ticket Item

Eureka! I’ve finally discovered the secret to blogging success! The good news is that I can’t wait to share the magic potion with all of you! Whoot!

Ready?

Let’s get started…

What is ‘blogging success’ at the outset? Is it something achievable? Is it quantifiable? For me, a successful blog is one that is loved by all. A blog that is pampered in its niche attracts thousands of visitors, garners hundreds of likes and is home to a never-ending string of comments. A successful blog stands out from the rest because, well, it is amazeballs. But what does it take for an amateur to get there? Did it cross your mind at some point in time that those established bloggers were starters, like you? Yeah? Good!

1. Passion

Passion is the key to unlock the door to blogging success. When you blog, you have to do it out of love, for its own sake; and not for money or for digital attention. Let me share my story with you. As a little child, whenever I was sad or depressed, I closed myself in my room, took a paper and scribbled down my woes. Sometimes they would be letters which I would write to God while at other times I’d be producing personal journals. It turned out that when I looked back the day after and read my musings, they were way better than what I’d have written had I not been miserable. And quite funnily, I would treasure those writings in a well-hidden precious box to re-read them again and again. (I still haven’t let go of this habit.) All just to tell you that you should be driven by your emotions when you blog. Do it for fun otherwise it will end up being a fiasco.

2. Create meaningful content.

This one is pretty straightforward. While Facebook might give you the carte blanche for posting things like, “I’m feeling excited to wear coconut leaves on top of the mountain”, the blogosphere will simply regard you as someone as thick as two short planks. When you blog, you have to articulate your thoughts and feelings lucidly. The 5W-1H is your best friend. Explain your sentiments. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information at the US National Library of Medicine, the average attention span of a human being has plummeted from 12 seconds in 2000 to 8 seconds in 2013, which is one second less than the attention span of a goldfish. Scary! So, always serve your audience with educative, inspiring and humorous blogs that will keep them hooked till the last sentence.

3. Focus on quality.

You know, good grammar is like personal hygiene-you can ignore it if you want, but don’t be surprised when people draw out their conclusions.

Guys, I’m not asking you to deliver in a ridiculously fake RP English either. The “Golly gosh! It has been yonks since one has last conversed with you, I must say. How d’you do?” is a no-no. You’ll be making a fool out of yourself. Cut the crap. It’s a bit much. You only have to master the rudimentary rules of grammar, punctuation marks and vocabulary. I advise you to avoid the “Haay wutt r yew doin?!” lest a random blogger replies, “about to throw a dictionary at your face”.

4. Be original.

The blogosphere is bursting at the seams with a considerable number of bloggers and the only way to set yourself apart is by confidently using your own voice. Let your personality dazzle through your words. Do not plagiarize, for plagiarism is the mark of the lowest of the lows.

“When you have wit of your own, it’s a pleasure to credit other people for theirs.” -Criss Jami

When you quote something as I have done above, use quotation marks, provide a citation within the text and make sure to link the citation of the quoted material to the reference. By doing that, you will be scoring credibility points. Not to mention, you will sound like a professional.

5. Presentation

Without further ado, let’s get down to the next vital factor which is presentation. We might preach about not judging a book by its cover and bla-bla-bla but who turns heads in the street?
She does.

Quite similarly, the appearance of your blog matters a lot. Your blog post could contain the most groundbreaking content but if it doesn’t seem inviting, attractive and easy to navigate, you’re less likely to earn social shares or natural back-links. Use colours, bullet points, photos and gifs, inter alia, as your props.

6. Encourage community.

You have to realise that there is no Sophia behind the screen on the other side of the world. There is a real walking, talking, living human who is probably going through the same struggles as you are. Successful bloggers respect other fellows in the blogosphere. They respond to comments left by their readers, they read, ‘like’ and ‘re-blog’ others’ posts. They are the ones who make friends all along and support them by showing blog-love. You have to be generous and considerate.

7. Consistency

The most-watched TV shows with the highest ratings are those that are broadcast consistently. In the same manner, maintaining consistency and frequency in your publishing schedule is a critical component of your success as a blogger. The more frequently you update your site with fresh content, the more chances you have to strengthen your SEO and be indexed higher by search engines. Readers will also notice your pattern, guesstimate your next blog and flock to your site at that particular time. It works wonders in the long-run.

In a nutshell, no successful blogger slid in on a shrimp sandwich. They worked hard, devoted ample time, resources and energy before they were recognized. Take it easy. Be patient. It’s not gonna happen overnight but with the proper techniques and efforts, you’ll get there, too.
